Long Time SVC Treasurer to Be Honored for “Service Above Self” to the Organization and the Vacuum Coating Community.
On May 7, 2024, the Society of Vacuum Coaters (SVC) will present Michael Andreasen with the prestigious Nathaniel H. Sugerman Award at SVC TechCon 2024 in Chicago. The Nathaniel H. Sugerman Award was established by the SVC in 1992 to commemorate Nathaniel (Nat) Sugerman and his enduring efforts in founding, nurturing and leading the organization.
Making a Difference for the SVC.
Michael Andreasen’s contributions to the SVC are unmatched in breath, depth and impact. In 1999, Michael took over the leadership of the Large Area Technical Advisory Committee and under his nearly two decades of guidance, it grew to become one of the anchor committees of SVC.
Andreasen became the SVC Treasurer in 2004 and held the role for a remarkable 19 years. He led the development of a modern financial reporting structure, supporting policies and budget planning framework. During the same period Andreasen served on the SVC Investment Committee, helping it adopt its current investment philosophy.
As an Executive Committee Member Michael advised nine different SVC Presidents and worked closely with the SVC executive team to engineer a successful decoupling from ASM in 2017. He was a source of wise counsel to the SVC and was instrumental in leading the organization through the COVID-19 pandemic.
A Storied Career.
Andreasen graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1967 with a B.S. in Physics. His career focused on product development, manufacturing process optimization and business development at The Clorox Company (1967-1980), OCLI (1984-1995), Guardian Industries (1995-2003), Applied Materials (2003-2206), NxEdge (2006-2009) and AGC Flat Glass NA (2009-2010). In 2010 Michael founded Vacuum Edge, a consulting company specializing in thin film products, processes and equipment.
At the Guardian Industries Science and Technology Center, Michael led a team to develop a new coating line which was adopted worldwide by the company and recognized as the most advanced, effective glass vacuum coating platform on the planet.
Throughout his career, Andreasen has embodied the saying, “It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.” Colleagues describe him as the consummate collaborator and mentor who regularly promotes his team’s accomplishments over his individual contributions.
Michael’s “Service Above Self” brand of leadership has made a difference to SVC that few other individuals can claim. The SVC and the thin film community are a better place because of him.
